Siamese Toast
Pyewacket, September 2025 In case you didn't know, I have a cat, and I recently realized that her color has changed since I got her. I've been learning about the fascinating science behind Siamese cats and the process of "toasting." Siamese cats exhibit a form of partial albinism that is dependent on body temperature. When they are born, they are completely white, lacking any pigment. However, as certain areas of their body cool down (specifically the ears, face, tail, legs, and paws) the enzyme responsible for pigment production becomes active, and melanin starts to develop in those areas. As they grow older, the coloration becomes more pronounced, resulting in the classic Siamese look. I had a general idea of this when I adopted my beloved Pyewacket.
